Welcome

I am a Roman Archaeologist specialising in the Roman army of the Imperial period. I have a particular interest in military architecture, the social use of space, social construction of time and the daily routines and practices of movement within Roman military bases. In my research, I draw on a variety of methodologies and approaches that cross over with the study of Roman cities, archaeology of movement, epigraphy and finds distribution research.

On this website you will find up to date information about my research, publications, excavation projects I am involved in, and other academic-related activities. You will also find information about how to contact me and a blog, where I share with you my professional experience of working in REF and Impact at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nottingham.

I have worked alongside University of Leicester Archaeological Services and taught university students on site for more than 8 years.

I  have a lot of experience organising and delivering outreach activities. I am currently organising the outreach programme for the Ancient Akrotiri Project as well as managing the evaluation of Research Impact Case Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nottingham

I have worked as a finds officer both in Poland and  in the UK. The projects include Burrough Hill, an English Heritage scheduled monument in Leicestershire and the Ancient Akrotiri Project, both run by the University of Leicester. I have also worked with finds for my PhD thesis and taught undergraduate students using finds.

Biography

I graduated from Jagiellonian University, Krakow in 2009, one of the oldest archaeology departments in Central Europe. Following this, I gained an insight into British approaches to archaeology during my M.Phil Degree at the University of Cambridge, Girton College. My MPhil thesis, supervised by Prof Martin Millett, looked at auxiliary commanding officers’ houses in Britain. Later, I obtained a fully funded PhD position and the post of a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Leicester. There, I developed my teaching portfolio – both in the classroom and in the field.

I finished my PhD in 2015 and having worked since then in outreach soon I will be taking up a new role at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nottingham overseeing the REF and Impact submissions within the faculty.

I hold the positions of Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester and at the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Nottingham. I am currently working on a series of articles and a monograph as well as bidding for external funding and participating in the teaching of doctoral students via the Graduate School. I am currently pursuing two research projects. One on the role of gaming and the culture of competitiveness in the Roman armies in the 1st-2nd century A.D. and a monograph project on mobility and military culture in Bu Njem, Libya as well as organising a symposium on anthropology of Roman warfare.
